Designing for a Cleaner Tomorrow: The Science of Our Aquamation® Solution

For more than two decades, Bio-Response Solutions has believed that engineering can and should make the world cleaner, safer, and more compassionate. That belief is the force behind our Aquamation® technology, a water-based alternative to flame cremation that is reshaping how funeral homes, crematories, and veterinary care professionals serve their communities.

Today, sustainability is no longer a trend. It is an expectation. Families want choices that feel meaningful and responsible. Communities want cleaner solutions that protect the places they call home. Professionals in end-of-life services want innovation they can trust, especially when the work they do carries such profound responsibility. Aquamation technology answers all three.

Where Aquamation Technology Begins: What’s Behind Our Process

At the heart of Aquamation services is alkaline hydrolysis, a scientifically validated reaction in which water molecules gently break down organic material in a controlled, lower-temperature environment. Instead of exposing remains to 1,600–1,800°F flame, the Aquamation process circulates a solution of 95% water and 5% alkali at 200–300°F. Not only is this approach more energy-efficient, but many families embrace it as calmer, gentler, and more respectful as well.

Powered entirely by electricity, the Aquamation system requires no smokestack and produces none of the harmful emissions associated with flame cremation — no CO₂, VOCs, NOx, SO₂, mercury vapor, particulate matter, dioxins, or furans. Because operations occur at significantly lower temperatures than flame cremation, even the mercury contained in dental amalgam does not vaporize and remains contained for appropriate disposal. Scientifically, the result is both efficient and remarkably clean, as the final ashes remain sterile and safe to handle.

At the end of the process, the remaining water contains only basic organic building blocks, including amino acids, salts, and sugars. This provides reassurance that nothing harmful is left behind or released into the air or water. These biodegradable compounds are safely treated through local municipal sanitation systems, following the same regulated processes used for water from homes, hospitals, and businesses.

The result is familiar and meaningful for families. Final ash remains are composed of natural mineral calcium phosphate, with the volume of ashes typically 20–30% greater than that of flame cremation because of the gentler nature of this process. Ashes produced through Aquamation services support the same memorialization, placement, and remembrance options that families have long associated with flame cremation.

Designed with Safety and the People Behind the Process in Mind

For operators, Aquamation technology offers more than a technical biosafety advantage. It also supports a safer, more predictable environment for the people who carry out this work every day. The process destroys all pathogens, along with chemotherapy and embalming agents, before final ashes are returned, helping ensure peace of mind for families and staff.

Medical implants are recovered in clean, intact condition and are ready for recycling. This keeps valuable metals in circulation rather than buried or lost. These design considerations reflect the Bio-Response Solutions commitment to protecting not only the environment, but also the professionals who rely on our systems.

Cutting-Edge Technology That Families Can Believe In

Clean science is essential, but the Aquamation solution offers more. Because end-of-life decisions are deeply personal and often made during moments of vulnerability, many families appreciate having a gentler, more environmentally responsible choice. Data shows that 80–95% of families choose Aquamation services over flame cremation when presented with the option, confirming what many professionals already know: This is where the future of end-of-life care is heading.

With sustainability as a key driver of today’s decisions, families and pet owners increasingly seek providers who reflect these values, particularly those who invest in solutions that protect the planet while honoring life with dignity.

Built for Reliability. Designed for Progress.

A cleaner tomorrow is possible only if the technology behind it is uncompromising and if it supports professionals in serving families with confidence and integrity. With more than 20 years of healthy growth and over 600 installations worldwide, Bio-Response Solutions systems are engineered for reliability, durability, and ease of operation.

Beyond the environmental benefits, our Aquamation solution helps businesses grow by reducing zoning and permitting barriers, lowering energy demands, and offering a meaningful point of differentiation in communities where sustainability matters.

Engineering a Future That Honors Life

Cleaner technology is not an abstract goal. It is a responsibility. As the pioneer of Aquamation® services, Bio-Response Solutions shows that end-of-life care can be both scientifically advanced and compassionate. Our innovations honor the lives of loved ones while supporting the professionals entrusted with their care.
